Fundamentally Fabulous ~ Blue Jeans

Shopping for the perfect pair of jeans can be like shopping for swim-wear.  Most of us dread it, but when we find the perfect pair...it's like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

As a little girl, my jeans were reserved for home, play dates and casual family visits.
I remember begging my Mum for years to let me wear my jeans on our weekly outings to the city, and week after week, they were deemed inappropriate.

Today, 30 something years on, jeans have become part of my daily uniform, and yes I allow myself the privilege of wearing them shopping in the "big city"...its' the rebel in me..
I can dress them up and take them into the night with sky high heels or I can throw them on a with a white tee or button down shirt and a cute pair of flats, and create a look that is effortlessly chic.

There are an infinite number of options for denim and it can be somewhat overwhelming. So lets break it down.

The 3 style elements that I would consider to be top priorities when choosing your blue jeans are cut, quality and fit.

The Cut. Find a style that suits you.

Like all our fundamental wardrobe pieces, knowing what compliments and flatters your shape will be your first consideration. There are a couple of general rules of thumb to follow, but remember there is always the exception to the rule, and very few of us have text book measurements, so invest the time into discovering your body shape and what styles create balance and accentuate your assets. If you are looking to minimise your hips & thighs, select a flare or boot leg; and nothing too high waisted. 
Tiny and petite? There are a number of styles that will suit your shape, my preference is for slim cut jeans...skinnies are perfect, and if you want to add height look for something a little higher waisted. The key for you is to avoid styles that will overwhelm your shape...we don't want to loose you!
Blessed with the long and lean? the choices is all yours...(yes we are all a teeny bit jealous) Straight leg, 70's inspired flare, boot cut, or boyfriend.... the denim bar belongs to you!

Once you have chosen the right cut, if you are looking to maximise the slim factor, opt for a darker shade of denim.

You know the Jeans fit well when:

• There are no bulges above the waist line. If you are experiencing the dreaded 'muffin' top, the jeans are either two small, or you need to try a higher rise
• There is no strain or excess of fabric (a little natural wrinkling is fine)
• There are no gaps in the back - this is usually an indication that you need a lower rise

Quality - My position hasn't changed -  buy the best you can afford. 

The pair of jeans that sit amongst your 'fundamental' wardrobe pieces, are generally in an even wash, not faded or ripped and don't have too much detail. Depending on your body type, they will be in a slim leg (skinny), boot leg or straight leg style in a darker shade, like the genetic dark denim bootcut 

Once you have the essential pair covered, look at how you can inject seasonal cuts and colours into your wardrobe for those fun, on trend pieces.

For those looking for great value for money, do yourself a favour and explore the range from Jeanswest. Blue jeans have become entrenched into our lifestyle, and when you discover your best fit, you will find yourself right in the middle of your confidence zone.

My advice? Be in continual pursuit of the perfect pair.

Fundamentally Fabulous ~ The jacket

There is something enduringly chic about a classically cut jacket or blazer, and worn well, it is a piece that offers timeless sophistication.

Navy and black are the favourites, and for this season I am adding white (so chic). This fundamental piece will see you through the seasons. It's one of those incredibly versatile items that can pull your outfit together to create a sharp, effortless and polished finish, whether you are wearing it over a dress for a night out, or pairing it with your favourite jeans, pumps and a tee. 

As always with the essentials, look for quality, cut and fit. For jackets,  pay special attention to the shoulders, (the seam should sit perfectly at the bony part of your shoulders) and ensure it is not pulling across the waist when buttoned up. 

Your body shape will determine which jacket looks best, so know what works for you. For example, if you are petite, a cropped version with a single button will be best for you - try the Saba Kelly Jacket. Curvy? Then look for a jacket with a cut in waist, and ensure it's not bulky or oversized. The Marcs Ponti Crepe Collarless Jacket  is a great option, and the long folded lapel adds a unique quality to it. Covered for your basics? This seasons palette offers you some exciting colours and prints, so be playful and have fun with this trend.

The Friend of mine Cadillac jacket made from 100% silk, contrasted with leather collar and bindings on twin front pockets, is a jacket that subtly offers a little edge whilst remaining a chic and sophisticated option with enduring style quality. 

The Faith Connexion structured jacket is perfection with it's angular hem and collarless neckline. It's climbing the ladder a little in price at $557, but if you can afford it, you will love it forever. Available on line from Another Love

Witchery have a nice selection this season and this Mini Tux jacket is a cute cropped version of the classic tuxedo jacket. Cropped Jackets are great for layering and also add an element of structure to loose silhouettes. If you prefer a more conservative  style, try the cropped collarless jacket at $130.

Looking for a twist on the classic double breasted jacket? 

Head straight for the Stream of Time blazer by Camilla and Marc. It's beautifully tailored with some gorgeous detailing including a rib inset collar, alternate lapel and decorative double breasted buttoning.  If you like to play with the classics, and can afford the luxury of doing so, then this is a fabulous option for you.

Just like the white shirt and tee, if a navy or black jacket is missing  make it a priority purchase. 

Have a play with various cuts and lengths and don't be afraid to experiment with prints and colours outside the neutral palette if the Navy and Black already hold prime position in your wardrobe.

Fundamentally Fabulous ~ tees & tanks

Achieving great personal style..... is there a magic formula? I wish I had a wand I could wave....

It's true that some people have a gift for creating fabulous outfits, however I do believe that anyone can achieve great style status and there are some key elements that are essential if this is something you want to create for yourself.

A fabulous wardrobe starts out with functional items, of which there are a number.
As we transition into a new season, it's the perfect time to edit your wardrobe and after an 'innocent' post on Jenni Sellan Styling, regarding the importance of making room for the basics, a whole conversation began around what those things are. 
As a result, I have decided to dedicate a series of blogs over the coming weeks on fundamental wardrobe pieces to share with you  and I will begin with a couple of my personal favourites, "tanks & tees".

One of my never fail outfits in the transition between seasons, is without question, a combination of my favourite jeans, (currently  Genetic Denim ) a white tee or tank, and a blazer.
While this is an outfit containing three of our fundamental pieces, without the tee or the tank, I would certainly attract a few looks for all the wrongs reasons! It's the piece that brings it together.

You would think that buying a simple tee or tank would be easy, especially considering that those in the fashion world - buyers, style editors, designers - (the list goes on) would agree that it is a wardrobe essential, however to my absolute frustration, in looking to combine great cut, quality and fit when shopping for the fashion fundamentals....it often proves more challenging than one would expect or hope, so I have done the walking for you.

One thing I will say at the outset; I have deliberately not featured cheap versions. Why?
Generally speaking, the fundamental and functional pieces of your wardrobe will not change.
Fashion items and seasonal trends are the pieces that we continually inject into our wardrobes, and because these items are seasonal, picking up the 'cheaper' version can be justified.
Compromising on quality when it comes to your basic items will simply result in you having to continually shop for them -  the fabric will wear quickly, and the shape will not hold.
Invest into your fundamental pieces. If you don't, you will end up spending more than your initial outlay, if you had chosen, quality.

By far, my favourite basic white tee and tank are from Jac and Jack. Gorgeous fabrics, great quality and not ridiculously over priced (in my opinion) with pieces ranging from $60 - $110

Witchery are always worth a look and as far as the mainstream offering goes, cover the basics and variations of, (featured below) well. Witchery also enjoy injecting colour & prints into their basic variations, which is great for a fun seasonal injection of fashion trends.

Pricing is mid range and quality is good. With a solid returns policy, in my experience they have always been willing to replace items where quality expectations are not met.

The humble tee & tank...two essentials that have the potential to be the building blocks of a fabulous and chic ensemble.

A little boutique....

My preferred shopping experiences will always be in gorgeous boutique environments, with unique collections, and great service. Sadly, to experience all three aspects is rare so whenever I do hit the trifecta I love to 'show and tell'. 

On my recent trip to the US, there was one boutique in particular that I fell in love with, located in beautiful Doylestown, Shop Sixty Five, (just 55 minutes from Philadelphia and 90 minutes from New York City). 

While we were shopping we had the privilege of meeting boutique owner, Linda La Rosa. 

Linda, a former New York stylist has an exquisite eye for detail and it is no surprise that the collections in the boutique were perfection.  

Linda and her team of girls were fabulous and they seemed to enjoy the experience as much as we did; each of them were engaging and 'present', and with their in depth knowledge of each collection in store, were able to pull from the racks and personalise a perfect selection. 

Impossible to leave empty handed, with a beautiful Rebecca Taylor dress, and a great deal on a fab pair of Genetic Denim skinny jeans from their amazing Denim Bar upstairs... I left one happy girl.

New York Dreaming

It will come as no surprise that looking good is important to me, and on my recent trip to NYC, I was feeling somewhat intimidated, (perhaps terrified might be a more appropriate word) at the fashion set that was about to greet me.

It is one thing to look and feel good in your "local haunts", quite another amongst the style set of what I would consider to be one of the style meccas of the world. 

The problem with fashion is that there is always going to be the next "IT" bag, something prettier, someone more stylish, and at the heart of it often lies comparison, insecurity and inferiority. 

We must embark on our own journey to discover our unique style mantra, because true style will never be a carbon copy. In the words of Epictetus, "know first who you are, and then adorn yourself accordingly".

I hoped that what I would find in New york would be eclectic, creative; true personal style that didn't necessarily look a particular way, but one that was diverse, interesting, colourful and unique.

I was not disappointed. 

New York is an inspirational colour palette that is unique in every way. Interestingly though, it was not what people were wearing that inspired me, rather the architecture, colour, food, side walk stalls... the windows, musicians in the park. The lifestyle....

There was more than enough room for everyone.... even the carbon copy - lets call it "borrowed style" because every now and then we just can't help but steal a look or two from the fashion set xo
